2021 Nissan LEAF vs. Toyota Prius Prime

Overview

While plug-in hybrid cars are considered to be a green alternative to full-gasoline engine vehicles, all-electric cars offer zero-emissions that help to reduce their carbon footprint. The 2021 Nissan LEAF is an all-electric hatchback with an impressive driving range. The 2021 Toyota Prius Prime is a plug-in hybrid sedan with a limited EV driving range.

Trims and Styling

Both the LEAF and Prius Prime come in three trims. The two lower trims of the LEAF can come with either of the two available battery packs and the upper trim comes exclusively with the long-range battery pack. Sporty, urban looks define the hatchback Nissan LEAF while the 2021 Prius Prime sedan has futuristic looks with a uniquely shaped front grille.

Power and Driving Range

The all-electric 2021 LEAF comes in two variations, the LEAF and LEAF Plus. Powering the standard two lower trims of the LEAF is a 40-kWh battery paired with a 110 kW electric motor that produces a combined 147 horsepower. Expect to get about 150 miles driving range with this variation of the LEAF. The top trim gets a 62-kWh battery paired with a 160-kW electric motor delivering 214 horsepower for a driving range of about 226 miles. This battery and motor setup is available for the two lower LEAF trims. Under the hood of the Toyota Prius Prime is a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine mated with an electric motor that stores power in the 90-kW battery pack to produce 121 horsepower. When in EV mode, the Prius Prime has a limited driving range of 25 miles.

Interior

Both the Nissan LEAF and Toyota Prius Prime have two rows of seats that can fit up to five people. The interior of the LEAF has numerous luxury features such as heated front seats, an efficient heat pump to warm the cabin, a multiadjustable driver's seat, a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, and leather upholstery. The Toyota Prius Prime's upper trims have many of the same interior features found in the Nissan LEAF including an infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, Bluetooth, and satellite radio.

Driver-Assist Features

While both the LEAF and the Prius Prime come with numerous driver-assist features such as adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and a lane mitigation system, the 2021 LEAF stands out with Nissan's ProPilot Assist semiautonomous driving technology. With an extensive driving range, refined interior, and innovative driver-assist features, the 2021 Nissan LEAF shines compared to the 2021 Toyota Prius Prime.
